A&K Philanthropy

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP)traces its beginnings back to 1982 when A&K Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, together with A&K founder, Chairman and CEO Geoffrey Kent, first raised funds for conservation efforts within the Masai Mara National Reserve. Today, AKP carries on A&K's social and environmental commitments on a global scale.

A&K's more than 60 companies and offices world wide sponsor projects designed to benefit their communities. A&K staff members donate their time and labor in addition to lending financial support, and rigorous oversight ensures that every donation is put to worthy use. Working in concert with local experts, AKP helps to ensure that peoples and wildlife continue to survive and coexist successfully.

AKP's global reach and on-the-ground presence proved to be priceless assets when, in May 2008, Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar's Irrawaddy Delta. Through Abercrombie & Kent's offices in Myanmar, teams quickly gathered and delivered essential supplies to affected village. Eventually raising more than $540,000 in contributions for emergency aid and equipment. AKP continues to provide ongoing support to the now overflowing orphanages in the worst affected area.

Our Vision

The goal of Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP) is to provide long-term support for existing natural ecosystems to ensure that human populations, flora and fauna continue to survive and coexist successfully. Our vision includes working together with local people and regional non-governmental organizations to inspire and develop sound community health and conservation practices, and to assist in mitigating global climate change.

AKP is deeply committed to worldwide conservation. We believe that the preservation of our natural and cultural heritages is best accomplished through the sustained unification of environmental and economic goals.

• Set an example and educate travellers to help them understand and respect the areas in which they travel so these fragile ecosystems can continue to thrive

A&K and Sanctuary Swala Camp have constructed classrooms and other schoolhouse buildings for the Gijedabung Primary School near Tarangire National Park. The school plays a key role in preparing rural children for modern world through education.

Donation - Make a Difference

Your donation directly supports grassroots efforts, such as planting trees in the Masai Mara region of Kenya, building wells for local communities in rural Cambodia, and providing research equipment needed to monitor changes in water temperature and salinity in the ocean surrounding Antarctica, currently the fastest-warming area on the planet.

• $1,500 provides supplies for volunteers to build a transitional house for a family of 3 or 4 people displaced by the earthquake in Chile
• $1,000 adopts a kiwi and gives you the opportunity to name your kiwi chick. A beloved icon of New Zealand, the endangered kiwi has a survival rate of only 5% in the wild
• $600 provides a school lunch daily throughout the school year for 20 needy children in Cape Town, South Africa, reducing short-term hunger and enhancing their ability to learn
• $300 builds a well for three to four families to share in rural Cambodia, providing clean, bacteria-free water in an area where children often fall seriously ill from waterborne illnesses
• $200 equips a Maasai family in Kenya with a jiko (stove) and piping to a biogas plant, which converts domestic animal waste into clean renewable energy for cooking
• $125 furnishes a bed, mattress, blankets and pillows for an impoverished family within the indigenous communities that surround the Sacred Valley of Peru
• $75 provides a uniform and shoes for 10 children at Deepalaya School in Delhi, India, where mentally challenged and indigent children learn skills and become self-reliant
• $50 plants a date palm tree to restore and safeguard the delicate ecosystem of La Palmeraie, a thousand-year-old date palm grove outside the walls of Marrakech, Morocco
